Standing there naked between two beautiful women was a mite disconcerting, even for a man of the world like Fargo. Laurie gasped and pulled the sheet up to cover herself, but Fargo didn’t have that option.

So he mentally said the hell with it and just stood there unashamed. Telling the truth was generally the best option, so that’s what he did now.

“You know what my plans were, Alexis. I was going to meet you here and take you to bed.” He inclined his head toward the bunk. “By the way, this is Laurie Trahearne. Laurie, Alexis Rimbard.”

“Yes, I figured as much, after you told me about having dinner with her,” Laurie said, her voice cold with anger.

Alexis’ smile was just as chilly. “I know you probably think pretty highly of yourself, Skye, but did you really believe you could rut with this little trollop and still have enough left to satisfy me?”

“Trollop!” Laurie cried. “Why, you—”

Fargo held up a hand to stop her. “This is all a misunderstanding,” he said. “Laurie was here in my cabin waiting for me. When I came in, it was dark and I thought—”

He stopped short, realizing that what he was about to say wasn’t going to sound right, but it was too late. “Oh!” Laurie said. “You thought I was her!”

“Ridiculous,” Alexis said with a disdainful sniff. “You couldn’t have mistaken that skinny little girl for me.”

“I’m only skinny compared to you, you big cow!”

Fargo was ready to get between them if Alexis lost her temper and tried to attack Laurie, but instead Alexis just shook her head contemptuously and said, “Good night, Skye. It’s a real shame you made such a mistake.”

She turned and stalked back out the door, slamming it behind her. Fargo swung around toward Laurie and started to say, “I didn’t mean for that to—”

“I know what you meant to happen,” she said as she stood up and reached for her dress. Angrily, she jerked it on. “Good night . . . Mr. Fargo.”

The door slammed behind her a second later.

Fargo stood there, not knowing whether to laugh or be angry. What had happened here was unfortunate in one respect—well, in several respects, he admitted—but it certainly hadn’t been his fault. After a moment, he shook his head and laughed. Sometimes a fella just had to accept the fact that life was going to play tricks on him every now and then. It had certainly played one on him tonight.

With that thought, Fargo climbed contentedly back into the bunk, which was still warm from Laurie’s body, and dropped off almost immediately into a deep, dreamless sleep.
